While preserving and deploying traditional lacquer techniques such as tamenuri (lacquer technique that uses a coloured-lacquer undercoating and a transparent-lacquer topcat) and kyo-shikki (a type of Kyoto lacquer) in his work, modern patterns and shapes are also characteristic of his lacquerware utensils.
